(3 cr.) (S&H) (TR) (1:00-2:15 pm) Spring-Serenity Duvall.
British journalist Brendan O’Neill coined the term “celebrity
colonialism” in response to the activism of actors Brad Pitt and
Angelina Jolie to describe the relationship between western
celebrities and third world politics. Drawing upon celebrity theory
from media studies, cultural studies, gender studies, history,
political science, as well as philosophy, this course will examine
popular media representations of western celebrities from the United
States, the United Kingdom, and Australia as they are involved in
global politics and travel to the Third World.

GLOBAL CELEBRATIONS: ANTH-A200/GLLC-G200
TR 11:15-12:30, Foster Quad 012A
Instructor: Audrey Ricke

What approaches do researchers take to study the political, economic, and social impacts of events which cross national boundaries? How do global celebrations, like Chinese New Year and Carnival, affect the ethnic, racial, and gender identities of the hosts and tourists who attend?

Drawing from anthropology, history, folklore, and tourist studies, this course will both guide students to critically analyze the potency that global celebrations have to enact or counter change and to apply this knowledge to other global phenomena.

S&H, open to all students, no prerequisites.
